Welcome to Day 17 of the Mindfulness for Moms challenge! Today, we’re tackling a big one— overcoming mom guilt.
You know what I mean. That nagging voice in your head, whispering everything else you should do – and that YOU should be your last priority.
It sneaks in when you take a moment to breathe, convincing you that prioritizing yourself is selfish.
But I think deep down we all know that taking care of yourself isn’t just okay—it’s essential.
We’re starting to see the truth that the more we release the guilt and embrace self-care, the more present, patient, and connected we become as moms.
In today’s guest post, Paula Welz of The Balanced Mom shares some simple but powerful ways to ditch the guilt and start making yourself a priority—without apology.
I know we’re all so ready for this one!

Meet Paula Welz
Hi there, mama! I’m Paula, founder of The Balanced Mom and a fellow mom of two boys.
I know firsthand how hard it is to juggle everything and still feel like you’re giving enough to your family, your work, and—oh yeah—yourself.
One thing I’ve battled (and continue to battle) is mom guilt. It’s sneaky, constant, and makes you feel like taking even five minutes for yourself is selfish. Sound familiar?
Here’s the truth that changed everything for me: Self-care is selfless, not selfish.
The Idea: Why Mom Guilt Holds Us Back
Mom guilt is that little voice telling you, “You should be folding laundry instead of resting” or “The kids need you more than you need this time.”
But the reality is, when we constantly ignore our own needs, we burn out. And when we’re running on empty, it’s harder to be the patient, loving, and present moms we want to be.
What if you gave yourself permission to recharge—without guilt?
Prioritizing your well-being helps you show up as the best version of yourself, not just for you, but for your family.
Why Overcoming Mom Guilt is Important
When you take care of yourself, a few magical things happen:
- You feel calmer and more in control.
- You model healthy habits for your children.
- You become more resilient to life’s daily stresses.
In short, you feel like YOU again!

Simple Steps to Prioritize Yourself Without Mom Guilt
Here are three small but powerful ways to kick guilt to the curb and start prioritizing yourself today:
1. Set a Guilt-Free Boundary
Choose one part of your day to dedicate just to YOU—no interruptions, no guilt.
Maybe it’s 15 minutes in the morning for journaling or 30 minutes after bedtime for reading a good book.
Start small but stick to it.
2. Schedule a Weekly Self-Care Activity
Put yourself on the calendar!
Whether it’s a workout class, a coffee date with a friend, or a solo trip to Target (we all know how magical that can be), treat it like a non-negotiable appointment.
3. Repeat This Mantra
Every time guilt creeps in, remind yourself: “Caring for me is caring for them.”
You’re teaching your children that self-care is essential and that everyone deserves to be cared for—including you.

Wow! Anyone else feeling empowered to care for themselves today?!
Moms deserve more than just survival mode. And it’s up to us to really start living life the way we want to.
Prioritizing yourself isn’t taking away from your family—it’s giving them the best version of you.
When you embrace self-care without guilt, you model resilience, self-worth, and balance for your little ones.
You are innately worthy of care, rest, and joy—just as much as anyone else in your family.
Like Paula said, “Caring for me is caring for them.“
