Welcome back to the Mindfulness for Moms series — where we explore ways to nurture not only our families, but also ourselves.

Today, I’m excited to share a guest post from Taylor Lane, a mom who beautifully embodies the practice of self-acceptance and mindful identity work in motherhood.

In this season of life, it’s easy to feel like we have to define ourselves in one specific way – with one specific label.

But what if we gave ourselves permission to simply be? To hold space for all facets of who we are, without forcing ourselves into one limiting label?

Taylor’s story is a refreshing reminder that mindfulness isn’t just about quiet moments or deep breaths — it’s also about releasing judgment and embracing the full spectrum of who we are as mothers and as women.

I can’t wait for you to read her take on breaking free from motherhood labels and stepping fully into your own version of motherhood — with curiosity, compassion, and a whole lot of grace.

Releasing Labels and Embracing All Parts of Yourself on Your Motherhood Journey

Motherhood has a way of making us feel like we need to pick a side.

Are you a stay-at-home mom or a working mom?

Are you the Pinterest-perfect mom or the go-with-the-flow mom?

Crunchy or mainstream?

Structured or free-spirited?

These labels can be inspiring, but most of the time they just add unnecessary pressure.

They make us think that we have to fit into just one category.

But what if the most fulfilling version of motherhood is found in the “and”?

What if breaking free from motherhood labels is the key to feeling more aligned in your mom journey?

Taylor’s Story

I’m Taylor Lane, living in Guatemala with my two babies under two in a bilingual home while running my online business.

In my life, I refuse to fit into one box. I revolt against labels. It makes me feel trapped.

But when it comes to motherhood, I put pressure on myself to be a certain way. Based on what I see on social media, read in books, or hear from family members.

Why can’t I have the same strong mindset in motherhood like I do in the rest of my life?

But then one day, when I was chatting to my good ole friend Chat GPT about all of this, I came up with a new label… one that is open-ended and feels like a magical door instead of a box.

“And Mom”

Being an And Mom means that instead of using the word “or,” I use the word “and.”

This allows me to embrace everything I want to be as a mother instead of closing myself off to the curated categories that come with high expectations and a lot of pressure.

The more I embrace the paradoxes of who I am, the more freedom I feel as a mother.

Breaking free from motherhood labels lets me honor all the versions of myself—without apology.

How To Embrace The Ands (and Start Breaking Free from Motherhood Labels)

Just like you don’t have to choose between a career or kids, you don’t have to pick between being an attachment parent or loving a solid bedtime routine.

It’s not about being a Montessori mom 24 hours a day. You can have screen time in the morning and independent play in the afternoon.

You don’t have to fit into the mold of what a “good mom” looks like based on outdated or unrealistic standards. You get to be both—because you are an And Mom.

The moment we release the pressure to conform, we open ourselves up to a motherhood experience that feels real, aligned, and sustainable.

When we embrace our contradictions instead of fighting them, we step into a place of self-acceptance.

That means less negative self-talk and more self-love. It’s not about getting it all right—it’s about allowing all parts of yourself to exist without judgment.

So here’s your permission slip to be a paradox: Be the mom who loves babywearing and the mom who enjoys a solo Target run.

Be the mom who runs a business and the mom who soaks up slow mornings with your babies.

Be structured and spontaneous. You don’t have to fit into one version of motherhood.

You get to be an And Mom.

Easy Daily Practices to Embrace Unlabeled Motherhood

So how do you start applying this mindset in your daily life? Here are a few practices to help you fully embody the And Mom mindset:

The 5-Minute Challenge

Set a timer for five minutes during a conversation with your partner, a friend, or a family member—and try not to talk about your kids.

Use this time to reconnect with other aspects of yourself.

Empower yourself to Cherry Pick

There are so many great takeaways from different approaches to motherhood and it is 100% valid to cherry pick from a bunch of them, creating your own design of motherhood.

Pick and choose only what you like about each school of thought, aka take what resonates and leave the rest.

Reframe conversations with ‘And’

When a friend says, “I’m not a good mom because I don’t set up sensory bins every day,” remind her: “You’re an amazing mom and some days are for activities, some are for TV snuggles. Both are great.”

Release the ‘shoulds’

Ask yourself if you’re doing something just because you think you “should.”

For example, are you baking homemade veggie tots for your toddler when you hate baking? Give yourself permission to let it go.

3-Minute Meditation

Close your eyes, notice your breath as you inhale fully and exhale fully. After a minute of mindful breathing, repeat these affirmations:

“I love and approve of myself.”

“I love and approve of my motherhood.”

“I love and approve of my life.”

“I am everything my child needs.”

“I let go of judgment here and now.”

Journal Your Mom Identity

Each night, make a list of the characteristics you embodied as a mom today—nurturing, patient, creative, adventurous, dedicated, innovative.

Notice how multifaceted you truly are and celebrate it all.

Social Media Cleanse

Unfollow or mute anyone who makes you feel like you have to mother in one “right” way. Even if you like them! If their content pressures you instead of inspiring you, let it go.

Take any of these practices for a spin and be a part of the And Mom movement. Breaking free from motherhood labels isn’t about rejecting who you are—it’s about embracing every piece of you.

Embrace Your Own ‘And Mom’ Journey

As you reflect on Taylor’s beautiful message, I hope you feel empowered to embrace all the layers of who you are — as a mom and as a whole person.

Mindfulness isn’t about fitting into a perfect mold; it’s about honoring your truth, releasing judgment, and making space for all the contradictions that make you you.

I remember when I first started exploring spiritual practices. I tried to jump head first into every practice and avoid ever feeling bad. Needless to say, that didn’t last long, and didn’t help me feel any better, either!

Once I learned to dance with my shadows and embrace all of the aspects of myself, I started to experience those sacred, precious, present moments. I started to believe that it was okay to be who I was AND it’s okay to be who I’m becoming.

The same is true for you, my friend.

We can all be And Moms!
