We’ve all had those mornings.

The kind where you hit snooze one too many times, trip over a toy on your way to the kitchen, and realize you’re out of coffee (the horror). Cue the chaos.

But here’s the good news: mornings don’t have to be madness.

They can actually feel… peaceful. (I know—wild concept.)

And believe it or not, the key to a calm morning starts the night before.

If you’ve already built a mindful evening routine (go you!), you’re setting yourself up for mornings that feel smoother, lighter, and way less stressful.

If you don’t have a Mindful Bedtime Routine yet – check out yesterday’s blog post and learn how to easily create one for yourself!

Today, let’s talk about how to create a mindful morning routine that will help you feel grounded, connected, and ready to tackle whatever mom life throws at you.

Why Mindful Morning Routines Matter

Mornings are powerful. They set the tone for the whole day. A mindful morning routine helps you:

  • Feel grounded and present, even when your day is busy.
  • Create space for yourself before the demands of the day kick in.
  • Boost your mood and energy—because what mom doesn’t need more energy?!

And before you start picturing some complicated, hour-long ritual, let me assure you: this can be simple and flexible.

It’s not about perfection; it’s about starting your day with intention.

Steps to a Mindful Morning Routine

1. Wake Up Gently

If your alarm is an aggressive BEEP BEEP BEEP, consider switching it up.

  • A Gentle Chime
  • A Favorite Song that will have you singing along before your eyes are open
  • A vibration alarm on your smart watch (some even wake you up at the optimal time during light sleep!)
  • A Sunrise Alarm Clock that mimics natural light

Bonus points if you set your coffee pot to brew ahead of time—waking up to the smell of fresh coffee is basically self-care.

I’ve always heard that waking up before the kids is a great idea, too, but I personally haven’t been able to do this yet.

I am hoping once the toddlers both sleep through the night at the same time (is that even possible?!) that I’ll be able to ‘wake up earlier’. I’ll report back if/when it happens!

2. Hydrate and Breathe

First things first: drink some water. I know coffee feels more important (trust me, I get it), but your body will thank you for that quick hydration boost.

I keep a water bottle by the bed, even though I rarely use it at night, because that first drink of water in the morning feels SO good.

Then, take a moment to breathe. Try one deep breath in, hold it for a few seconds, and exhale slowly. Boom—you’re already more mindful.

If you’ve got a bit more time, try a quick breathing exercise:

  • Box breathing: Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, and pause for 4. Repeat a few times to feel instantly calmer.

3. Move Your Body (Even Just a Little)

Movement doesn’t have to mean a full workout (though if that’s your jam, go for it!). Even light stretching can help shake off sleep and wake up your body.

A few easy moves:

  • Roll your shoulders.
  • Touch your toes.
  • Do a few cat-cow stretches.

Movement helps clear mental cobwebs and boosts your energy for the day ahead.

4. Set an Intention

Think of this as giving your day a little direction. Your intention doesn’t have to be profound—it can be as simple as:

  • “I will be present with my kids.”
  • “I will give myself grace today.”
  • “I will drink my coffee while it’s still warm.”

Take a breath, repeat your intention to yourself, and carry it with you throughout the day.

5. Do One Thing That Feeds Your Soul

Mornings are prime time for tiny moments of joy. Think about one thing that makes you feel good and sneak it into your routine. It could be:

  • Reading a few pages of a book.
  • Journaling a quick thought or intention.
  • Pulling an oracle card for guidance.
  • Sitting quietly with your coffee (heavenly, right?).

Even a minute of something that lights you up can shift the whole vibe of your morning.

Something I really love to do is to think about 3 things I’m grateful for before I even open my eyes.

My initial thoughts at the sound of the alarm aren’t always gratitude… so I try to be intentional about bringing those thoughts to the forefront as soon as I can.

When Mornings Go Off the Rails

We can’t escape the fact that some mornings are just pure chaos.

Despite your best efforts, someone will lose a shoe, breakfast will end up on the floor, and suddenly, you’re running late. Again.

Here’s the thing: it’s okay. It happens to all of us.

And guess what? Nobody is going to die because you were five (or fifteen) minutes late.

In those moments, remember: your connection with your kids matters more than the clock. Being calm(ish) and loving(ish) in stressful moments can turn a frazzled morning around faster than barking orders like a drill sergeant.

I also truly believe that everything happens for a reason. How many times have you passed a car accident on the highway that you could have been a part of if you’d left on time?

Things like that help me to slow down and trust the process, regardless of how it looks to my analytical brain in the moment.

When things get wild, try these quick tips to center yourself:

  • Take a Breath: Seriously, one deep breath can calm your nervous system and help you respond with patience instead of panic.
  • Let Go of Perfection: The kids might leave the house with mismatched socks or bedhead. It’s fine. Life is too short to stress over mismatched socks.
  • Narrate the Chaos with Humor: Turn a meltdown into a funny story. “Oh no, we’ve entered the Great Sock Crisis of 2025! Will we ever escape?” A little humor can lighten the mood and help your kids shift gears.
  • Hug It Out: A quick hug—even when you’re in a hurry—releases feel-good hormones for both of you and resets the vibe.
  • Try Julie’s Co-Regulation Technique – hold your child’s hand and squeeze when you exhale. Have them inhale when you’re squeezing, and then when they exhale and squeeze it’s your turn to inhale.

And most importantly, remind yourself: You’re doing a great job.

A rushed morning does not define your whole day.

Choose connection over perfection, and give yourself (and your kids) plenty of grace.

The Power of Mindful Morning and Bedtime Routines

Remember how we talked about the importance of mindful bedtime routines?

When you combine that evening prep with a mindful morning routine, it’s chef’s kiss.

The dishes are done, the floor is (mostly) clear, and the coffee is ready. You’re not starting the day in chaos—you’re starting it with calm.

And the best part? You can customize this routine to fit your life.

Some days you’ll have time for all the steps; other days, you’ll be grateful you got in one deep breath before the madness started.

It’s all about showing up with intention, no matter how small.

Your Turn!

If you try one of these steps, let me know how it goes! I’d love to hear about your morning – even if it was a chaotic one!
