Meet Cara Nitz

Hey there, fellow mama!

I’m Cara Nitz, and I’m a mom of five kids, homeschooling, homesteading, and married to my husband Adam for 18 years.

I’m also a marriage and life coach, and I love to empower women to transform stressed marriages into loving connections through embracing their femininity and God’s love.

I have created a marriage course, offer individual and couples coaching, masterclasses, guides, a podcast, and run workshops as well.

The Power of Mindful Communication in Marriage

I want to offer you some valuable action steps to take today for mindful communication in marriage and healthy conflict resolution, especially if you’re struggling with feeling connected to your husband and desire a peaceful, joyful marriage.

I know firsthand that marriage stress leaks over into every area of your life as a woman: your emotional, mental, and physical health, being a mom, and everything else you do.

So, how do you manage your emotions while also respecting your spouse’s feelings when things get heated, to draw closer instead of being driven farther apart?

The Key to Connection: Emotional Awareness and Regulation

Here’s the answer: the end goal in every conversation is connection. Emotional awareness and regulation are important. You can navigate tense situations with love, compassion, and validation to connect more deeply with each other.

Here’s how to do this:

Step 1: Build Emotional Awareness

Start by naming what you’re feeling and allowing yourself to fully feel it. This self-awareness is the foundation of mindful communication in marriage.

Then, you can share that emotion without blaming your spouse.

Step 2: Differentiate Between a Thought and an Emotion

Take ownership of the stories your brain is telling you versus what is actually true.

Example:

❌ “I feel like you’re always late!” → That’s a thought, not a feeling.

✔️ “I feel disappointed that you’re late today.” → That’s an emotion, and it’s true.

Step 3: Practice Active Listening with Validation and Compassion

Listen to understand your partner rather than listening just to respond. There’s a big difference between the two.

Instead of immediately having a comeback that might escalate the conversation, offer your partner the same validation and compassion you’re offering yourself. Try saying:

  • “I can see why you’d feel that way.”
  • “I appreciate that you feel comfortable enough to share this with me.”
  • “I’m really sorry that happened.”
  • “Don’t worry, we’re going to get through this together.”
  • “It really matters to me that you feel that way.”

Take a Break If Needed

If things are getting heated, take a short break (5–15 minutes) to cool down before continuing the conversation.

This break can help you avoid saying things in the heat of the moment that you may regret. It also gives you time to self-soothe and take responsibility for what you’re bringing to the conversation.

Bringing More Connection into Your Marriage

A huge thank you to Cara for sharing such valuable insights on mindful communication in marriage!

Learning to regulate our emotions, listen with compassion, and approach conversations with connection in mind is the heart of mindful communication in marriage.

It can make such a difference—not just in our relationships, but in our overall well-being as moms.

Before my husband and I got married, we did pre-marital classes, and to this day, we always talk about how beneficial they were.

We recommend them to all of our engaged friends because they forced us to have those uncomfortable-but-necessary conversations—with a mediator, so no one felt attacked (except me… before I decided to really buy in to the process and experience it fully… haha).

At first, I resisted, but eventually, I loved it.

I actually looked forward to those sessions, and after every class, I felt closer to my then-fiancé.

Every deep conversation reassured us that we were building a solid foundation for a wonderful life together.

And I want every couple to know—it is possible!

Even if you didn’t do pre-marital classes, you can absolutely take Cara’s advice (or work her 1-on-1!) to create that same deep connection with your spouse.

If you have a break through, we’d love to hear about it! Leave a comment here or use the hashtag #alignedasamother on social media!

I’ll see you back here tomorrow for Day 21 – The Joy of Being All In: Mindful Playtime with Your Kids!

xoxo, Angie
