Mindful Observation — Finding Magic in the Mundane
Let’s face it, friends: life as a mom can be chaos central.
Have you ever felt like you’re on autopilot, moving through your day without noticing much of anything around you? No judgment here—I’ve been there too.
Between stepping on LEGO landmines and refereeing sibling squabbles over who gets the blue cup (again), it’s easy to feel like we’re living on autopilot.
But what if I told you there’s a way to make even the most ordinary day feel extraordinary?
Welcome to Day 5: Mindful Observation, where we hit pause on the hustle and tune in to the tiny details we often overlook.
Ready to rediscover the magic in your everyday surroundings? Let’s do it!
What Is Mindful Observation, Anyway?
Mindful observation is basically your official permission slip to slow down and look around.
It’s about seeing the world with fresh eyes, noticing the colors, shapes, and textures that usually blur into the background.
When you practice this skill, you start noticing the beauty in everyday life—like how sunlight dances on the kitchen counter or how your toddlers making each other laugh is the best sound in the world.
By observing your surroundings with intention, you’re not just improving your mood; you’re retraining your brain to focus on the now.
And as we’ve learned over and over again – the “now” is where all the magic happens.
Think of it as the grown-up version of a scavenger hunt, except instead of looking for pirate treasure, you’re spotting beauty in your kitchen (yes, even there).
And bonus: it’s scientifically proven to reduce stress and boost happiness. What mom doesn’t want more of that?
How to Practice Mindful Observation (Without Overthinking It)
Here’s how you can weave mindful observation into your day:
1. Pick Your Spot
You don’t need a Zen garden or a mountaintop (though if you have one of those, I’m coming over).
Wherever you are—your kitchen, your backyard, or even the school pick up line — can be your observation station.
The key is to stay put and really tune in.
2. Start Noticing
Take a deep breath. Feel your feet on the ground. Roll your shoulders back.
Congratulations—you’ve officially arrived in the present moment! Now, take a deep breath, then look around.
What catches your eye?
Is it the way the sunlight dances on the floor, the tiny chip on your coffee mug, or the quirky angle of your toddler’s latest crayon masterpiece?
3. Engage All Your Senses
Don’t stop with sight. We have multiple sense for a reason, let’s use all of them!
- Sound:
- What do you hear?
- Maybe the hum of the fridge, the chirp of birds, or your dog still snoring.
- Can you hear the laughter of kids playing?
- Touch:
- How does your coffee mug feel in your hands?
- How does the seat of your car feel?
- I remember thinking how luxurious my new car felt the first time I sat in it – bring that joy back by witnessing the feeling again.
- Smell:
- Is there a hint of lavender in the air?
- Have your kids colored with smelly markers lately?
- Is your cinnamon latte really bringing out the feeling of winter?
- Taste:
- Savor your next sip or bite like it’s a five-star meal.
- Really feel the textures and flavors.
- This is also a great time to practice being grateful for your food & beverages!
The more senses you involve, the richer the experience.
4. Let Go of Judgment
This isn’t a Pinterest contest – the point isn’t to create a picture-perfect moment but to truly see and appreciate what’s already there.
Even if it’s just the stubborn stain on your counter that has definitely outlived its welcome.
Observation without judgement is a simple, but not always easy, way to come back to the present moment.
5. Be Curious
Pretend you’re seeing everything for the first time. (Think Bandit Heeler in “Born Yesterday”)
That pile of laundry? Notice the textures, colors, and even the story each piece tells. (That sock with the hole? Oh, the adventures it must have had!)
6. BONUS! If you have time – Write It Down
Grab your favorite journal, a notebook, or the notes app on your phone and jot down what you observed.
You’ll be amazed at how much beauty you discover in the ordinary.
Those are some of my favorite journal pages to look back on when I’m having a rough day.
What You’ll Gain from This Practice
You might be wondering, “Okay, but what’s the point of staring at my coffee mug like it’s a piece of modern art?” Oh, friend, let me tell you:
A Fresh Perspective
Mindful observation helps you see the beauty in the ordinary. That’s not just poetic fluff—it’s a real mindset shift that can make your everyday life feel more joyful.
A Stress Reset
Slowing down and focusing on the present helps lower cortisol levels (a.k.a. the “stress hormone”). Focusing on your surroundings can also quiet that incessant mental chatter.
It’s like a mini spa day for your brain—minus the cucumbers.
Improved Focus
It’s like a mini-workout for your attention span, making you more present in other areas of your life.
A Deeper Connection
When you’re more present, you connect more meaningfully with the people and world around you.
Suddenly, your child’s finger-paint smudge on the fridge isn’t an annoyance; it’s a masterpiece (well, almost).
A Day in the Life of Mindful Observation
Here’s what this could look like in real life:
- Morning: While sipping your coffee (or reheating it for the third time), notice the steam curling from the cup. Feel the warmth in your hands.
- Afternoon: On a walk, spot the intricate veins on a leaf or the way shadows play on the sidewalk. Bonus points if you bring your kids along and make it a game.
- Evening: Before bed, glance around your room. Notice the soft glow of the lamp, the texture of the blanket, or the way your partner’s face softens in sleep (cue the “aww”).
Here’s what I saw this morning while putting these ideas into practice:
- The sunlight streaming through the window turned my messy kitchen table into a piece of art about my family.
- My oat milk brown sugar cinnamon espresso smelled like leftover christmas spirit and warmed my hands like a big hug.
- The Meal Prep Worksheet on the fridge reminded me that past-me had good intentions about meal planning.
Did I still see the crumbs under the mostly-broken toaster? Yes.
But I also noticed the laughter spilling in from the living room and realized how much I love this beautifully messy life.
Let’s Share the Magic
Mindful observation is a simple yet powerful way to bring more joy and peace into your day.
But here’s the thing: it’s even more fun when we do it together!

Sneak Peek: Tomorrow’s Challenge
Tomorrow we’re talking about The Power of Storytelling!
Your story matters, and telling it can be healing to so many other people – not to mention for you!
For today, go forth and observe, mama! Remember: the magic is in the details—and you’re doing an amazing job noticing them.
