Mindfulness for Moms Series Day 12: Breath Awareness
Hey Mama, Let’s Take a Breath!
Today, we’re diving into the magic of breath awareness.
I know what you’re thinking—breathing is the one thing you’ve got covered, right? What if I told you that you could feel better just by changing the way you breathe?
Imagine your breath as your secret weapon for staying calm, centered, and present, even when your little ones are turning your living room (or even YOU) into a jungle gym.
Breathe In, Breathe Out—It’s That Simple
Today, we’re going to spend just 5 minutes paying close attention to our breath.
I’m not talking about the kind of breathing you do when you’re trying to wrangle your toddler into their car seat (we’ve all been there).
No, this is about slow, intentional breathing.
Inhale deeply, filling your lungs like you’re taking in the fresh mountain air, and exhale, letting go of all the stress you didn’t even realize you were holding onto.
Do this a few times, and you’ll feel like you’ve hit the reset button on your day.
Why Bother With Breath Awareness?
You might wonder, “Why should I pay attention to something I do 24/7 without even thinking about it?”
Well, here’s the secret: When we focus on our breath, we anchor ourselves in the present moment.
This simple practice pulls us out of our racing thoughts (What’s for dinner? Did I remember to switch the laundry?) and grounds us in the here and now.
When we rush around, we are subconsciously saying “I am not grateful for this moment, I need to get to the next moment.” That is not the way I want to live my life, or the example I want to set for my kids.
Since you’re on this blog and following this challenge, I’m going to guess that you are actively trying to be more present and mindful, too!
One way we can do this is by connecting to our breath and really feeling into each movement. Feel the cool air going into your nose, notice how it fills up your lungs, and savor the warm air as it leaves your body.
Benefits of Breath Awareness
Breathing is essential to life, but Breathing Mindfully offers fantastic benefits!
Regular breath awareness can:
- Reduce stress,
- Increase your sense of calm
- Give you the patience of a saint.
It’s like finding a little oasis of peace in your hectic day!
The real cherry on top for our family is that our little ones have noticed and started practicing as well.
If I start to get frustrated, my 3 year old will say, “Mom, how about you take some deep breaths?” It sounds more like “take deep breath-is” which makes it even more adorable.
When she’s having a rough moment with lots of big feelings, I can say to her, “How about we take some deep breaths together? Let’s smell some flowers, and act like we’re blowing out candles!”
She gets to pick the color of the imaginary flowers we’re smelling, and the number of invisible candles for us to blow out. Gamification of mindfulness for the win!
We have avoided a lot of frustrated-mom-moments and toddler-tantrum-throw-downs by implementing deep breaths and mindful breathing into our daily lives.
I know this tool can be helpful to you and yours, too!

Breathwork: The Extra Mile for Extra Zen
If you’re feeling ambitious (and let’s be honest, sometimes we all need a little extra), consider doing a Breathwork session with a certified coach.
This is like taking your 5-minute breath awareness practice and turning it into a full-on spa day for your mind.
It’s deep, it’s restorative, and you’ll walk away feeling like you just meditated on top of a mountain, with energy to spare!
Don’t worry if this sounds intense. Breathwork is adaptable, and a good coach will guide you through it at your own pace.
Think of it as the ultimate self-care treat—a way to nourish your spirit and recharge your energy.
My absolute favorite breathwork coach and somatic healer is Erin Nicole – she has a whole breathwork library! You can find her on Instagram @soulnakedsomatics
What Can You Expect?
After just one day of focusing on your breath, you’ll start to notice subtle shifts.
Your mind will feel clearer, your mood lighter, and your patience… well, it might just stretch a bit further than usual.
And the best part? This is just the beginning!
Over these 30 days, these small, mindful practices will stack up, creating a powerful ripple effect in your life.
By the end of this Series, you’ll have a whole toolbox of mindfulness techniques to keep you grounded, present, and connected to your inner calm—no matter what life throws your way.
Let’s Stay Connected
