Speak with Intention – The Power of Mindful Speech
Words are everything.
Words have meaning, power, and energy behind them.
They can build bridges, tear them down, or just leave someone wondering why you thought “moist” was a good word choice (does anyone not cringe at that word?!).
Today, we’re diving into mindful speech—choosing words with care, kindness, and a healthy dose of intention.
Let’s practice thinking before we speak.
Trust me, it’s harder than remembering where your toddler left your keys.
But the payoff? Stronger connections, more understanding, and fewer “Oops, I didn’t mean it like that” moments.
Why Mindful Speech Matters
Think about a time when someone said something that made your day. You remember the feeling, even if you don’t remember the words, right?
Now think about a time someone said something that ruined your day. Words can cut deep and leave a lasting impression.
Words hold power.
When we’re mindful of what we say, we create a ripple effect of kindness.
Your thoughtful words could be the reason someone smiles today!
How to Practice Mindful Speech
Ready to give it a try? Here’s how:
1. Pause Before You Speak
Before the words tumble out of your mouth, pause for a beat.
Ask yourself 3 Questions:
- Is this kind?
- Is it necessary?
- Is it true?
If you can’t answer Yes to all three questions, maybe save that thought for your journal.
2. Choose Words That Uplift
Replace criticism with encouragement.
Instead of “You never do the dishes!” try, “Hey, I really appreciate it when you help with the dishes.”
See the difference? One sparks gratitude; the other…not so much.
We’re not perfect – and neither are our families – which means that sometimes we do have to correct behavior. If you find yourself in this situation, practice “Connection Before Correction.”
If you asked your kids to pick up your toys and notice that they got 60% of the way done, instead of correcting their actions, connect with them first.
This can look like, “Hey! I see you cleaned up your toys, thank you, I really appreciate your help! Can I help you pick up the rest of them?”
Or for the older screen-obsessed kids, I know the death stare I would get if I said, “Why are you on your phone if you have homework to do?”
The statement is true, and it is necessary, but it’s not very kind.
A reframe that gets the same point across could look like this: “That video looks so funny! I have some funny ones saved that I think you’d like, too. Why don’t you finish your homework and then we can watch them together?”
This creates connection and encourages your child to do what they need to do. Win-win!
3. Watch Your Tone
It’s not just what you say—it’s how you say it.
A simple “fine” can mean anything from “I’m totally okay” to “I’m plotting your demise.” Be aware of how your tone reflects your intention.
And on that note – don’t say you’re fine if you’re really not. I know it works in the RomCom world, but we want to build meaningful real-life relationships. Which leads me to the next step:
4. Be Impeccible with Your Word
This is a lesson from one of my favorite books – The Four Agreements.
The first of the Four Agreements, it means to use your words with integrity.
No games, no innuendos or sarcasm (except occasionally with your BFFs, of course) – speak only what you mean.
There’s also a bit about only speaking nicely about others and yourself, which is just as important.
The Benefits of Mindful Speech
When you practice mindful speech, you’ll notice something amazing: people respond differently. Conversations feel lighter, connections deepen, and there’s way less drama.
Here’s what else you can expect:
- Stronger Relationships: Thoughtful words build trust and show you care.
- More Inner Peace: Speaking with intention means fewer regrets about things you wish you hadn’t said.
- A Happier Home: Your family absorbs your energy, and mindful speech creates a positive, uplifting vibe.
The Challenge: Mindful Speech for a Day
Your mission (should you choose to accept it):
For the rest of today, commit to mindful speech.
- Pause before you respond.
- Choose words that uplift and inspire.
- Check your tone.
- Speak with Integrity.
It’s okay if you mess up (we’re human, not robots!). Just reset and keep going.
Share Your Journey
I’d love to hear how Day 9 goes for you! Share your experience on social media using the hashtag #alignedasamother.
Did your mindful speech bring unexpected moments of joy?
Did you avoid saying something you’d regret?
Let’s celebrate those wins together.
What’s Next?
Tomorrow, we’ll dive into Day 10: Embracing Your True Introvert Self through Journaling and Self-Reflection for Moms by Amber Hansel!
Until then, keep spreading kindness through your words. Your voice matters, mama, and the world is better when you use it with intention.
xoxo, Angie
