Mindfulness for Moms Series Day 8: Mindful Tech Use
Raise your hand if you’ve ever checked your phone, then forgot why you picked it up in the first place.
Yeah, me too…
Today, we’re going to pause, unplug (a little), and bring mindfulness to our tech habits.
Spoiler: your phone will survive without you for a bit, and so will your followers.
AND… today happens to be my birthday!
I thought it would be fitting for me to do this challenge on this day, since it’s all-too-easy to like & respond to every single birthday wish the second that notification arrives.
This year, I’m going to focus on myself & my family first, and respond to everyone else at the end of the day. We’re spending the whole day together and outside – I can’t wait!!
The Reality of Tech Overload
The truth is that we live in a world where our phones have become an extra limb.
They’re our planners, social hubs, and even our therapists (hi, Thriends!).
But constant connection can leave us feeling frazzled, distracted, and—ironically— more disconnected from the people right in front of us.
Why Mindful Tech Use Matters
Mindful tech use isn’t about tossing your devices into the ocean. (Although some days it’s quite tempting.)
It’s about reclaiming your time and attention. When you intentionally set aside tech-free moments, you make space for presence, joy, and connection.
Imagine sitting at dinner and actually tasting your food instead of scrolling TikTok.
Or playing with your kids without hearing the phantom buzz of notifications. Bliss, right?

Step 1: Notice Your Habits
The first step to mindfulness is awareness.
Today, pay attention to how often you reach for your phone. Don’t judge yourself, just observe.
Is it out of boredom? Habit? A desire to escape folding laundry?…
You might be surprised how often your hand magically gravitates toward your device. Make a mental note of each time you want to reach for your phone.
Step 2: Set Boundaries (Yes, Even for Social Media)
Pick a specific time today to go tech-free. It doesn’t have to be dramatic—start small!
Maybe it’s 30 minutes during breakfast or an hour before bedtime.
Pro Tip: Tell your friends & family you’re doing this, so they don’t assume you’ve fallen off the grid when you don’t answer their texts immediately.
We’ve implemented a “No Phones at the Table” rule – and my teenager gets very giddy when she gets to remind me of this rule.
Step 3: Fill the Space
What will you do with your newfound freedom? Intentionally be present.
- Play a board game with your kids.
- Go for a walk.
- Journal your thoughts.
- Stare out the window and just observe beauty like a MMC in a romantasy novel.
When you give yourself the gift of undistracted time, you might feel more grounded, connected, and—dare I say—happier.
The Ripple Effect
This simple act of mindfulness can have a ripple effect.
By being fully present, you’re teaching your kids (and yourself) that life is richer when we’re not glued to screens.
Over time, you’ll notice you feel calmer, less scattered, and more in control of your time.
I’ve definitely seen a difference in my kids (and myself!) on “No TV Days”.
Share Your Wins
I’d love to hear how this practice feels for you!
Did you notice anything surprising about your tech habits?
When you pick your phone back up (because we can connect mindfully!), share with us what you did during your tech-free time with the hashtag #alignedasamother. Let’s celebrate those small victories together!
Keep Going!
Tomorrow’s challenge builds on today’s momentum, so don’t stop here! Join me for Day 9, where we’ll learn about Mindful Scintilla from Jordan Lapierre!
Mindfulness is a journey, not a one-day destination.
But trust me, these small shifts add up to big changes. You’ve got this, and I’m cheering you on every step of the way!
xoxo, now-a-year-older Angie
