grounding and gratitude

Hi! My name is Felicia and I’m a 32 year old Mama of 3 boys!

When I first became pregnant, I really started to look around me and make some more natural switches. This included finding ways to calm myself naturally.

Grounding and practicing gratitude are some ways to center yourself and shift to a more positive mindset.

Grounding, aka earthing, is the practice of connecting to the Earth’s natural electrical charge. It is often achieved by walking barefoot on natural surfaces like grass, soil, or sand, or a specialized grounding mat.

This can help bring yourself back to the present moment, reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and promote overall well-being by allowing free electrons from the Earth to neutralize free radicals in the body.

Gratitude is important because it promotes positive emotional well-being, enhances relationships, and improves overall mental and physical health. Practicing gratitude helps shift focus from what’s lacking to what’s already abundant in life, gaining a sense of contentment and joy.

Research suggests that regularly expressing gratitude can reduce stress, lower depression levels, and even improve sleep quality.

It also strengthens social bonds, as expressing thanks can deepen connections and increase feelings of empathy.

Ultimately, gratitude helps individuals cultivate a more optimistic, resilient, and fulfilling life.

Here are some actionable steps for gratitude and grounding practices to help you feel more centered and appreciative:

Gratitude Practices:

1. Daily Gratitude Journaling

  • Each day, write down 4 things you are grateful for. They can be simple or profound. This helps shift your focus from what you lack to what you already have.

2. Gratitude Jar

  • Keep a jar and pieces of paper near it. Every time you feel thankful for something, write it down and put it in the jar. Over time, you’ll have a visual reminder of all the positive things in your life.

3. Gratitude Reflection Before Bed

  • Before sleeping, take a moment to mentally list three things you were grateful for during the day. This helps to foster a positive mindset and improve sleep quality.

4.Verbal Gratitude Practice

  • Throughout your day, express your gratitude to others. Say “thank you” more consciously, whether it’s to a colleague, a friend, or even a stranger. It fosters connection and positivity.

5.Gratitude Meditation

  • Sit quietly for 5-10 minutes, focusing on your breath. Then, mentally list things or people you are thankful for, allowing each thought to sink deeply into your consciousness. We also can implement grounding into our day to day lives.

Grounding Practices:

1. 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Exercise

Look around and identify:

  • 5 things you can see
  • 4 things you can feel
  • 3 things you can hear
  • 2 things you can smell
  • 1 thing you can taste

This brings your attention to the present moment and helps calm anxiety.

2. Deep Breathing

Practice diaphragmatic breathing: inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a few seconds, then exhale slowly through your mouth.

This helps regulate your nervous system and anchor you in the present.

3. Body Scan

Lie down or sit comfortably.

Focus on each part of your body from head to toe, consciously releasing tension as you go.

This helps to reconnect with your body and the present moment.

4. Walking Meditation

Take a walk outside, paying full attention to the sensation of your feet touching the ground.

Feel the earth beneath you and the rhythm of your body moving.

This can help you feel more rooted and calm.

5.Nature Connection

Spend time outdoors, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Take in the sights, sounds, and smells around you.

Engaging with nature helps reestablish a sense of stability and grounding.

6. Use of Grounding Objects

Carry an object (a stone, an essential oil, or small token) that you can hold when you need to reconnect with the present moment.

Focus on its texture, temperature, weight or smell.

Integrating Grounding and Gratitude Practices:

  • Gratitude and Grounding Walk: While walking in nature, combine grounding and gratitude by noticing what you are grateful for in your surroundings (e.g., the fresh air, the beauty of a tree).
  • Gratitude Grounding Meditation: Start with a grounding technique like deep breathing or a body scan, and then transition into a gratitude meditation by reflecting on what you appreciate in your life.

By consistently practicing these techniques, you can cultivate both a grounded, present-focused mindset and a heart full of appreciation.

You can rewire your brain to think more positivity using gratitude.

Gratitude journals and guide books are a great place to start. I created Mindfulness & More as a guide to help others find more natural ways to remain calm and mindful.
